Now that the deadline for putting work up for the degree show has passed I can share some of the pieces I’ve been working on. For my beetle books I found an amazing company that prints tiny books! perfect for my beetle theme. Prinstagram is an online service that prints Instagram photos in adorable formats such as these tiny books! I fell in love with them instantly and the customer service team are excellent! loving the fact that I wanted beetle sized books. I am so pleased to finally share these with you and I will definitely use this company again to build a tiny library!! These books are also magnetic so what’s not to love! Mr Beetle certainly enjoyed his tiny book.

Odd Volumes

I can now share a very exciting project that I have been working on. My finished book for the library of lost books project! After flicking through the pages of my book many a time I felt the book didn’t need much recreating, upcycling or remaking. The words within were a work of art on their own without further embellishment by me.

I decided that the only thing it needed were pictures to enhance and sit alongside the fabulous text. The first few pages inside the book listed various members of the odd volume Sette (a gentleman’s book club). The members with their unusual and intriguing titles became essential characters for me to illustrate and labelling them fig 1, 2, 3 etc. mirrored the old, oddness of the book.

In total I made nineteen illustrations that fitted perfectly with the motto on the back of the book, ‘There Is Divinity In Odd Numbers’. Figure 1 takes pride of place on the front of the book box depicting ‘His Oddship’, leader of the Sette with figure 2 up to figure 17 sitting neatly between the pages of the book. Figure 18 and 19, slightly three-dimensional illustrations, were additional pieces of art to be imagined as a luxurious extra ‘to be had of No Bokesellers.’ The final addition was a list of illustrations indicating the role of each character with the traditional spelling of words such as Mechanick, Chirurgeon (like Surgeon), Boke etc. to further authenticate my additions to book.

Below are my photos of the book in progress and the finished piece. A huge thank you to Susan Kruse, curator of the library of lost books, who gave me the opportunity to participate in such a brilliant project.

Well it’s getting very close to the deadline for my final major project and I have got some very exciting things going on. I probably won’t be updating my blog with any major pieces for a week or so, as I want to keep some things a surprise for the degree show. However I have had lots of ideas that, fingers crossed, are going well at the moment. I also can’t wait to design the new header for one of my favourite blogs! http://maximalspace.wordpress.com/ who also featured my own collection of objects on the sister blog http://maximalspaceathome.wordpress.com/2012/11/28/personal-collection-2/. But until then here is a preview of a piece I will be submitting for a competition. My favourite characters!! Fish People!!
